As Kashmir’s marriage season draws near, we are reminded of the substantial costs that frequently go along with these festivities. Many families, especially those from lower-income origins, struggle to afford the extravagant customs, but many others are able to participate, especially when it comes to their daughters’ weddings. According to religious beliefs, simplicity can lighten everyone’s load in these trying times. In view of this, I would like to draw attention to the Marriage Assistance Scheme, a vital program for disadvantaged families. This programme is intended to give girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds the essential support they need to celebrate this significant life milestone in dignity. The Social Welfare Department of Jammu & Kashmir has a scheme to help poor girls of marriageable age who belong to families with an AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) or PHH (Priority Households) ration card. Under this scheme, eligible girls will receive ₹50,000 as financial assistance for their marriage. The money will be directly transferred to their bank accounts before the marriage through online payment (DBT mode).
Girls who want to apply must submit their applications online. The District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) will check the girl’s age and marital status and forward the case to the Deputy Commissioner with recommendations. The Deputy Commissioner will approve the financial assistance after verifying the girl’s eligibility. This scheme is available in all districts of Jammu & Kashmir.

To be eligible for the scheme, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
Gender and Age:
Must be female.
Must be 18 years or older (legal marriage age in India).
Family Eligibility:
Must belong to a family with an AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) or PHH (Priority Households) ration card.
No Prior Benefits:
Must not have received similar financial help from other schemes, especially the Ladli Beti Scheme.
Application Timing:
Must apply at least one month before the wedding, submitting proof of marriage, age, ration card, and Aadhaar card to the District Social Welfare Officer.
Education Requirement:
Must have passed at least the 8th grade or equivalent.
For school dropouts, between 2022 and 2025, this rule will be relaxed. However, starting from April 1, 2025, the 8th-grade certificate will be mandatory
How to Apply for Marriage Assistance
The government offers financial help for girls from low-income families before their marriage. Here’s a simple guide to apply:
Apply Online:
Submit your application to the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) at least one month before your wedding, along with the required documents.
Verification by DSWO:
The DSWO checks your marital status, age, and makes sure you haven’t received similar benefits from other schemes like the Ladli Beti Scheme.
Approval by Deputy Commissioner (DC):
After verification, the DSWO sends your case to the Deputy Commissioner, who checks your eligibility and approves the financial assistance.
Receiving the Funds:
Once approved, the Social Welfare Department transfers the money directly to your bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
