Early planning key to safe, smooth yatra

With the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra being both a deeply spiritual journey and a major administrative challenge, the message from Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo was clear: preparation must begin well in advance. While chairing the 15th High-Level Committee meeting of the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, he urged all departments and stakeholders to move early and work in close coordination to ensure a trouble-free yatra in 2026.
Past experience has shown that delays in tendering and execution often create pressure closer to the yatra period. By directing key departments, Tourism, PWD, Jal Shakti, PDD, RDD, H&UDD, BRO, Telecom and others, to complete all formalities within the coming month, the administration has set a firm timeline aimed at avoiding last-minute rush and ensuring quality arrangements on the ground.
Safety, however, remains the core concern. The Chief Secretary’s instructions to identify and clearly mark disaster-prone and vulnerable stretches along the Baltal and Pahalgam routes reflect a people-first approach. His clear direction that no tents or temporary facilities be set up in high-risk areas underlines the administration’s resolve to prevent avoidable tragedies.
The emphasis on strong Standard Operating Procedures, to be framed and implemented by the Disaster Management Department in coordination with district authorities, is another crucial step. Assessing and strengthening holding capacities at camps and transit points, both within and outside the yatra area, will help manage pilgrim flow more effectively and respond better to emergencies.
Overall, the tone of the meeting was one of responsibility and foresight. If these directions are followed in earnest, Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026 can be safer, better organised, and less stressful for pilgrims and officials alike—honouring both faith and public safety in equal measure.
