There is a constant danger on the streets of Kashmir if you are driving a car or riding a two-wheeler. Even though your driving skills may be top-notch and you have all the requisite documents including third-party health insurance, a driving license, and pollution certificate. But that is just you. You can never be sure of others, especially the new money.
There are thousands of youngsters on the streets of Srinagar who have received these cars and expensive bikes as a gift from either their parents or other relatives. They do not care about rules. In a few cases, they could be heard shouting and threatening from a mile away to anyone who does not let them pass by at high speed. This crying and shouting is accompanied by a constant pedal on the accelerator and not even the slightest care about the security of other commuters. Day in and day out we hear about responsible drivers in white-collar professions like doctors, teachers, and lawyers claiming someone bumped into their car and fled. It just does not matter how responsibly you drive or ride. If it is your bad day you will have to bear the responsibility.
These rich kids are from influential families. In case you get into an argument with them the chances of a fistfight are real.
A decade back these roadsters were found around areas with a high density of coaching centres but now they are everywhere. They just zoom by at a speed which is not permissible within the city limits and the authorities conveniently look the other way.
The authorities must adopt an iron fist policy towards these troublemakers. The police must be given a free hand in dealing with them. A driver driving responsibly on our streets deserves the assurance that other people behind the steering are also driving responsibly. This is a fundamental right. We cannot have lawbreakers driving crazily on our streets threatening vehicles and lives of other people. Police must without any hesitation arrest the ones driving too fast or too irresponsibly on our streets.
