The Supreme Court has urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his estranged wife Payal Abdullah to sit down together and make one more attempt to resolve their matrimonial disputes. This direction comes even after a previously attempted mediation between the two failed.
Hearing Omar Abdullah’s appeal seeking divorce, a bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K Vinod Chandran, on April 15, noted that despite the unsuccessful mediation, it was worthwhile to give reconciliation another shot. The bench has given the couple three weeks to engage in fresh efforts at resolution and scheduled the next hearing for May 7.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had dismissed Omar Abdullah’s divorce plea on December 12, 2023, upholding a 2016 family court order that denied him a divorce. The High Court had found no merit in his appeal.
The Supreme Court had previously sought a response from Payal Abdullah on the matter before giving this latest directive.
