Displaced people living in a camp in Afghanistan’s Balkh province have sold their children and their kidneys in order to keep their families afloat.

The families escaped heavy conflict between Taliban and erstwhile government forces before the former took the reins of the country.
According to a report by TOLOnews, the price of a child is between 100,000-150,000 Afghani and the price of one kidney is 150,000-220,000 Afghani.

The families are residing in a camp in the province’s capital, Mazar-e-Sharif.

Poverty, economic problems in the country and Covid-19’s outbreak forced them to take such decisions, the families said.

“We are overwhelmed with problems. No one pays attention to us. We are in deep trouble,” TOLOnews quoted a displaced person as saying.
Dilbar, another war-displaced person, said she had no choice other than selling her kidney to take care of her children.

“I was rescued by my operation. My child was sick. I took her to the hospital for treatment, but the doctors told me her treatment would not be done,” she said.

Mohammad Sadiq Hashimi, head of a charity committee working in the area to stop them from selling the kids and kidneys, urged affluent people to help those in need across the country.

“There were some sisters, who were ready to sell their kidneys – some of them have already sold their kidneys. I saw some families who were selling their children. We were able to help them,” he said.

Afghanistan is in dire need of humanitarian assistance. International donors have been facing so many problems in providing aids since the Taliban took over in August last year.
