Day after dead crows and chicken were spotted in Allachizab village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara District on Sunday, a team of the concerned department on Monday reached the village to spray disinfectants and collect dead birds for sampling.

The BVO said that it was premature to establish whether there were symptoms of Avian Influenza in the dead chicken and birds in the village and can be established only after testing of the samples taken.

“As a precautionary measure we made an extensive spray of disinfectants in the village to prevent the spread of influenza if any and also collected dead birds for sampling,” said Block Veterinary Officer, Bashir Ahmad.

Moreover, the officer sought cooperation from the locals to deal with the virus in the area, and “as a precautionary measure, the visiting officer has advised shopkeepers and locals not to sell and consume chicken in the village,” locals informed.

Last month, in a nearby village Payerpora Gulgam samples of dead birds and chicken were found positive for Bird Flu, after which District Magistrate Kupwara, Imam-Ud-Din declared a one-kilometer radius from the epicenter as a red zone, while areas extending up to a 10-kilometer radius were declared as alert zones.
