Transport is like oxygen to people around the globe. It has come to the list of basic needs after food, clothing, and shelter. As far as our valley Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, the condition of transport is not bad but there are some problems which are difficult to deal with or can’t be tolerated. No doubt public transport runs smoothly during the summer season but when it comes to the winter period people have to face many challenges regarding travel. As the winter season is arriving public transport disappears suddenly at evening hours. It is quite unfortunate that after 5 pm all the passenger vehicles like mini buses become scarce which creates hardships for the commuters. People from far areas of Srinagar like Bemina, Nishat, Kamwari to Eidgah, Baspora, etc, and people from rural areas have to face trouble.
All people including private and Government employees who work up to late hours and come back during dusk time don’t find any public transport to reach their homes. In compulsion, they have to stop private vehicles which can be quite dangerous. Due to the non-availability of buses working women are forced to take lifts from strangers which can sometimes lead to harassment or abduction. They have to wait and which is why they have face a lot of eve teasing on the roads. A poor person cannot afford to take auto-rikshaws as they can efford it, especially labourers who have to walk miles with torches in hand. Some of them move on bi-cycles to return back which is tiring. During emergencies, people get irritated as they have to move from one place to another. They wait for hours longing for buses. Hence public transport should be available to meet the needs of people. Therefore we request the LG administration to make the electric buses accessible in the evening hours so that people heave a sigh of relief.
