There have been more than 5000 cases of Dengue reported from the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir – surprisingly Kashmir valley has also reported 19 cases. The increase in the dengue cases is a serious matter of concern as this disease can be fatal unless precautions are taken. This disease causes the platelet count to dip suddenly and unless the patient is hydrated on a constantly he/she may require hospitalisation on immediate basis.
This disease has wreaked havoc in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru this year but such a surge in Jammu and Kashmir was unheard of in the past. This is a serious consequence of unbridled urbanization and global warming. The mosquitoes are now funding newer habitats in the monsoon season and despite the best efforts of the administration to ensure no water gets accumulated at a place beyond 48 hours the mosquitoes do find breeding ground at every nook and corner of the union territory.
Mosquitoes still remain the organism which causes the maximum number of deaths on the planet. They are far ahead of every other animal. Malaria is still considered a killer disease responsible for millions of deaths across the globe.
The people must ensure that no water gets accumulated around their surroundings – changing water of coolers, putting only the requisite amount of water in the flower pots, not leaving water in the buckets outside doors, or in spare tyres and other utensils outside houses. The timely fumigation can also be an effective way to counter the menace of dengue.
We do not want to wake up with a scenario where for a glass of goat milk we have to pay a sum ranging between Rs.2000 to Rs.5000. This is exactly what happens in places like Delhi and Bengaluru when the dengue cases spike suddenly. Goat milk is considered to be a local remedy to increase platelet count in severely affected patients.
We need to maintain better hygiene around us to ensure that we tide over this menace of dengue.
