The exchange of fire occurred in the Miran Sahib area, where police had set a trap after receiving intelligence about the possible movement of two wanted criminals. The suspects were allegedly involved in more than a dozen cases, including attempted murder and arms smuggling.

When confronted, the two men tried to break through the police cordon by opening fire, the official said. In response, the police team fired back in a measured manner, acting in self-defence and to ensure public safety.

The official added that both suspects lost control of their motorcycle after an accident and attempted to flee under the cover of darkness. Police gave chase, and one of the men was later discovered injured in a canal.

He was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. His identity has not yet been confirmed, police said.

As of the latest reports, authorities were still searching for the second suspect.
