The photograph send shockwaves down our spine. How can a teacher be so cruel? The swollen eye of the child from a school in north Kashmir who is barely six or seven years old was emblematic of the deep rooted menace of corporal punishments prevalent in our schools. It is amazing how all this is being allowed right under the eyes of the authorities. Had this case not been highlighted in social media this teacher could very well have been teaching still in that particular school. It is only because this case was highlighted in the social media that the authorities have taken the required action against him.
However, the action taken after the perpetrator has conducted his act is not enough. The relevant authorities need to be proactive in this thing and broadcast messages that indulging in corporal punishment of any kind would incur the strictest provisions of the law. The authorities need to take steps to insure that such a thing does not happen again.
The evil philosophy at work here is the old age, “Spare the rod and spoil the child”. This rotten philosophy is what emboldens a teacher to indulge in corporal punishment. Some other teachers indulge in other forms of humiliating punishments which even though may not cause physical harm but at the same time leave deep scars on the physce of the students.
One wonders what prompted a teacher to hit a student of a primary grade. The New Education Policy has laid specific stress on making primary education more practical oriented and student friendly. If the student is not attentive in your class then the first reason is that you are not teaching it properly or not making it interesting enough.
Times have changed. There is no provision or moral justification for any kind of corporal punishment. The teacher involved in this incident must be given the strictest possible punishment.
