Residents of Sheikh Mohalla, Check Ferozpora village of Tangmarg area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district are up in arms against the Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to replace the decayed wooden electric poles in their area.

According to the locals, the wooden electric poles were installed by the department decades ago and till date, they (PDD) have failed to install sophisticated electric poles in the village.

The residents allege that they are living under constant fear due to low-lying electric wires tied with decades-old wooden poles in their area. The wires are decayed and fall in jiffy due to winds.

“Due to low-lying overhead transmission lines, there is always a fear of any untoward incident and the onus will lie on the PDD,” said Farooq Ahmad, a local resident of Sheikh Mohalla, adding the transmission lines are posing a severe danger to the lives of people of the area.

Locals said that the dangling electric wires fixed to these wooden poles are posing a constant threat to life and property. “We have approached the officials of the concerned department a number of times but they have always turned a blind eye towards our genuine,” they added.

“We made repeated requests to the PDD officials seeking alignment of transmission lines on the new-era electric poles, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” Tariq Ahamd, another local resident said.

The residents sought the intervention of Chief Engineer PDD in this regard.
