Low-income groups are particularly affected by the increasing cost of eatables such as chicken, dates, and mutton, as vegetable price shocks are feared to add to their woes.

Peer Sajad, a local resident of Maharaja Bazar expressed his concern by saying, “the month of Ramadhan is yet to begin, but the prices of fruits and vegetables are skyrocketing, fruits, vegetables and other essential items are no longer affordable for middle-class people.”

“The fruit prices are really high, it’s out of the reach of common man. The unfortunate part is that no one from the administration is here in the market to check the prices of essential commodities,” said Mohd Shafi, another local resident of Abi Guzar area.

A senior citizen said that fruit vendors decide the rates on their own as there is no checking parameter for them.

“All around the valley most of these fruit vendors have made mafia. Enforcing agency is merely making tall claims but on grounds, nothing is happening,” he said.

According to the locals,  markets are dumped with substantial amount of dates, but the rates are too high.

Director FCS&CA, Abdul Salam Mir didn’t received call from this reporter, despite many attempts.
