Improving air quality in the valley should be the top concerns for the environmentalists and the administration as well. People have been breathing toxic air for over decades now. Although Kashmir has purified air as compared to Delhi still the pollution level is increasing at an alarming rate. Winter season forces people to burn firewood and use Kangri’s to keep cold at bay but at the same time, it pollutes the air. Other than this rapid urbanization, factories, industries, brick kilns, and smoking in public places increases major risks to human health. Vehicular emissions are also responsible for raising difficulties in breathing difficulties. The number of vehicles in valley has also increased from the past years. Each person owns more than one car which pollutes the environment. Unhealthy spikes in the air are causing serious respiratory issues i.e lung diseases such as asthma, cough, chronic, sinusitis, etc. Constant exposure to dust is likely to cause organ failure, premature death and chest complications in the future. Employees, children, and regular travellers are more likely to catch infections. Elderly persons have weak immune system which is why they need to be more careful while travelling. As per reports small babies can get infected with tuberculosis when the air is polluted. Knowing that the level of pollution in increasing, people deliberately dont to wear masks. We focus on other issues but the reality is polluted air takes thousands of lives annually. It seems that people are least concerned about their health and the future consequences. We must take strong initiatives to control air pollution like riding motor cycles and bicycles, driving few vehicles and avoid smoking in public places. It can further help to reduce ambient air pollution. To improve the quality of air, planting more and more trees should be a priority at the Government and public level. Seminars must be conducted to spread awareness among the youth to save the future generation. For today we cannot sacrifice our tomorrow. We have to handover, beautiful Kashmir to the future generations as it was. If we don’t protect heaven then the future would definitely taunt us.
