Residents of Mahin-Drang area of Tangmarg hamlet in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have been facing inconvenience due to the lack of streetlights on the roads, making it difficult for people to commute during the night.
Locals said that they have to face immense hardships in absence of lights while authorities are acting as mute spectators.
“We can’t walk in darkness, especially during the winter season. The road is full of snow and it becomes tough for us to walk in snow due to the absence of street lights,” said Suhail Amir, a local resident.
“The area becomes too dangerous in darkness as people can easily be prey to wild animals. Without streetlights, there is no way to escape. The animal can maul a person anytime. When street lights are installed a person can be alert on these deserted roads,” he said.
They added that as soon as dusk sets in, the entire area plunges into darkness, despite being a tourist area.
“With no lights, a large number of pedestrians and two-wheelers have met with accidents on the road or were bitten by stray dogs due to the absence of street lights,” said Parvez Ahmad, another local resident, adding that there is a dire need for installation of street lights to keep people way from trouble.
We request the LG administration and the concerned department to identify the areas without street lights and try to install them as soon as possible so that the commuters find a sigh of relief.
